This was a nice leisurely stroll around the paths at Winnall Moors  and the focus of the time was to take photographs with mobile phones and compact cameras.

None of us are professional photographers and using easily accessible kit we tried to look at things in a different way and to capture the essence of the site. Our small group settled in spots and watched and tried different techniques to get different angles of shots.

I really enjoyed taking the time to sit and watch’

It is surprising what can be done with a mobile phone camera these days and to be viewed in small formats there are some surprising results.

‘I didn’t know my camera could do this…I shall do this again now I know how!’

As you can see it was the height of summer and with blue skies and sun ablazing (obviously not) we walked from Durngate to St Catherines Hill, quite some trek in our limited window of time.

The plan was to take a look around a grazed grassland site in comparison to the Moors and the wetland restoration that is taking place at Winnall Moors. It was hoped to see lots of grassland invertebrates in the sunshine….however the sun didn’t shine and we took a long time to find even a grasshopper and a thorough search for a cricket. I don’t think a single butterfly was seen on the wing, the views were impressive across the City and the skyline though…

I know things about St Catherine’s Hill now that I didn’t before, I have been here many times but this has given me more of insight into the grazing and the management of the site and why it is grazed…shame we didnt see the insects we were told were here!’
